Before hitting theaters, the live action of “The little Mermaid” It’s already given enough to talk about due to its cast and some of the changes to the 1989 band which marked the childhood of entire generations. Something few fans have noticed since its premiere is that one of the most iconic and fun scenes was deleted by decision of the director under an important argument.

Despite the criticism it received, it was recently revealed that the new version of “The Little Mermaid” is a resounding success at the box office, managing to surpass other films such as “Fast and Furious 10” at its opening weekend. Although it continues to divide opinions, because, among other things, some changes fail to convince fans.

“Not everything that works in animation works live. (…) I saw it more clearly while working. We would go through it and say, ‘That wouldn’t work in a live-action movie’ or ‘Yeah, that would work’. It’s very important that while you’re building a movie like this, be aware of it and protect what’s inside, but also know that this is a reinvention, it’s not just a ‘remake,’” director Rob Marshall said in an interview with SensaCine.

Under this argument, he indicated that they had decided to eliminate the scene in which the Chief Louispalace cook, try to cook at the sebastian crab and this triggers an intense struggle for which he provokes a mess in your kitchen all to the rhythm of “Le Poissons”. A battle between the characters that is still maintained at the end of the original version.

Changes in “The Little Mermaid”

That’s not the only thing that’s changed in “The Little Mermaid” live-action, as the composer alan menken -who created the original melodies with Howard Ashman 34 years ago- said he changed the lyrics of the song “kiss herto raise awareness of the importance of consent.

“People have become very sensitive to the idea that Prince Eric could somehow force Ariel to kiss him without her consent,” the composer said in an interview with Vanity Fair, adding that ” Poor souls in disgrace” is the other song that will have changes. in the lyrics, it’s the one Úrsula sings when she offers Ariel to lose her voice in exchange for having legs.

“You’ll find you get nothing by talking unless you plan to scare them off,” the original song reads, noting that Ariel you don’t need to talk conquer the prince. With this I will refer to the Sexism and that the women must remain silent, in this sense for the new version Ariel accepts the deal but to “open her own way different from that imposed by her own family”.
