OG App: The new ad-free Instagram has been banned from the App Store

This week we announced the arrival of the OG app, a platform that promises Instagram users to be able to view their feeds without ads or suggested posts. However, the App Store has removed the “new Instagram” from its app catalog.

Apple’s decision came shortly after Instagram owner Meta announced it had taken “enforcement action” against the OG app. However, it is not yet possible to know if the ban on the new platform was caused by the request of Mark Zuckerberg’s company.

According to a statement released by a Meta spokesperson, OG violates company policies and is taking all appropriate enforcement measures. The executive declined to comment on whether the company contacted Apple, but noted clone sites are banned.

“A clone site is a third-party site that duplicates, in whole or in part, the content of an existing site,” explains the tech giant. It is worth mentioning that Instagram does not have a public API (Application Programming Interface) to allow developers to create their own versions of the social network.

And the developers of the OG app themselves have reported that they have “reverse-engineered” the API, which appears to violate Instagram’s policies. Meta has also reflected on the safety of its users accessing this new app.

What does the OG app say?

In a post on the official Twitter account of the OG App, the company revealed that Meta has permanently banned all personal accounts of the team’s employees from Facebook and Instagram.

“Meta intends to take extraordinary measures to crack down and censor us simply because we did the right thing for its users,” he said.

One of the founders of OG App, Hardik Patil, told Engadget that he has not received any official statements from Meta. “Users deserve the right to control what they consume and OG will continue to defend and fight for this right,” he said.
