Nuclear accident in Ukraine is “dangerously close”, warns the UN agency

The war between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for more than two years and appears to be far from over. Since the beginning of the conflict, one of the points of greatest tension has involved the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) the risk of a nuclear accident is real.

Risks of nuclear accidents in Ukraine

The Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant is located in southern Ukraine and has been occupied by Russian forces since March 2022. The site has already been the target of gunfire and, in early April, suffered a series of drone attacks . Russians and Ukrainians exchange accusations about the perpetrators of the attacks.

This Monday (15), the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a body linked to the United Nations (UN), stated that there are real – and increasingly greater – possibilities of a nuclear accident occurring in Ukraine. Rafael Grossi said the site’s nuclear security is already compromised. The statements were made during a meeting of the UN Security Council.

We are getting dangerously close to a nuclear accident at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia plant. These reckless attacks must stop immediately. Although this time, fortunately, they did not cause a radiological accident, they significantly increased the risk at the Zaporizhzhia plant, where nuclear safety is already compromised.

Although the plant’s six reactors are now undergoing a cold shutdown, he said the potential dangers of a major nuclear accident remain very real. The information comes from G1.
