Microsoft surprises and launches the Linux distribution

After integrating part of the penguin system into Windows to make life easier for IT professionals, Microsoft recently confirmed the launch of its first official Linux distribution.

It is worth mentioning that the novelty does not come with the proposal to retire Windows and is not even useful for the common user. Called Azure Linux, the minimalist system focuses on light weight, security and reliability and was created to run projects in the cloud, i.e. it was developed specifically for corporate use in servers and data centers.

How is Azure Linux?

After years of clashes with the community that defends Linux, the system also reinforces a new vision of the company, which in recent years has been approaching the world of open source.

The new distribution is another example of this. Instead of taking advantage of a ready-made version and tweaking the edges here and there, the software giant has preferred to bet on something created almost from scratch with code “borrowed” from Fedora, another popular name when it comes to Linux.

In a press conference at the Microsoft Build 2023 event, Jim Perrin, director of Microsoft programs, explained that Azure Linux can be tuned according to the needs of the company. “We make the changes we need (…) the Linux ecosystem is about that,” he concluded.
