“He has lost his soul,” says the co-founder of Instagram about the social network

Kevin Systrom, an American programmer who helped found Instagram, has expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the social network.

In an interview for the “On with Kara Swisher” podcast during SXSW, she said that the social network “has lost its soul.” Speaking to the tech journalist, Systrom said he logs into Instagram to see what his friends and family are up to, but the social network is too focused on advertising and business.

“I went to see what my friends were up to and what my family was up to. I think the problem is that the incentives always go to more commercials, more creators, more business, more ad dollars.”

She said she used to see friends posting pictures of their routines and now they only post “#ads”.

Recently, Systrom has developed together with the Brazilian Mike Krieger – another founder of Instagram – the new social network Artifact, focused on personalized news.

For him, Instagram “focused energy on people living seemingly amazing lives with no limits, doing the fanciest things, looking their best, wearing the fanciest clothes.”

He considers this aspect of the social network “terrifying” as it makes people believe that what is being posted is real life.

“Life is very difficult and everything people post on Instagram is the tip of the iceberg. It’s this race to the bottom of who can be the most perfect.
