The return of digital cameras by young people

The old cameras, low quality and considered outdated by photography lovers, are back in fashion. Young people are following this trend faster and faster, sharing their photos with the hashtag #digitalcamera, which already has 184 million views on social networks.

Famous influencers, such as Kendel Jenner and Bella Hadid, are encouraging the use of old cameras, posting photos that are super blurry or have excessive lighting. The style is very reminiscent of images captured by the paparazzi and tabloids published in the 2000s.

“People are realizing that it’s fun to have something not connected to the phone,” said Mark Hunter, a photographer also known as Cobrasnake. “You are getting a different result than you are used to. There is some lag in gratification,” according to the The New York Times.

Mark started out recording his youth with a digital camera and is currently photographing new celebrities and influencers. “They’re rewinding the clock to 2007 and ‘basically reliving every episode of ‘The Simple Life,'” he said, referring to a reality show at the time that starred Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.

On Ebay, searches for these cameras increased 10 percent from 2021 to 2022, with some specific models being more sought after, said Davina Ramnarine, a spokeswoman for the company. For example, searches for “Nikon COOLPIX” have increased by 90%, she said.

According to lifestyle strategist at trend forecasting firm WGSN Insight, Brielle Saggese, this trend has grown among young people because it feels more authentic. Photos taken with digital cameras can convey “a layer of personality that most iPhone content doesn’t have,” she said.

“We want our devices to blend silently into their surroundings and not be visible,” Saggese said. “The Y2K aesthetic has turned all that upside down,” she added, describing selfies and mirrored photos in which digital cameras are visible accessories as “stylistic choices.”

For students, this new trend is a way to get away from the phone and focus on something “new”.
