The rector of UNAM supports the UdeG after a dispute with Enrique Alfaro
The rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Enrique Graueshowed its support for the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) given the attacks it is currently undergoing from the government of Jaliscodirected by Enrique Alfaro.
“A public university needs a public budget, and the state is responsible for funding; In this, Mr. Rector General, all our solidarity,” said Graue Wiechers during his participation in the Guadalajara International Book Fair.
During the forum “The future of public universities”, Ricardo Villanuevarector of the UdeG, underlined the importance of universities and their work in training new generations.
In his message, he said that educational institutions around the world must be revolutionized, and even take platforms such as Google That is Coursera, which offer specializations that result in immediate hiring, but with the differential factor of providing comprehensive learning. In addition, he assured that these institutions must prepare human beings for trades or positions that do not yet exist.
“Let the universities be open for life, so that when there is this new work, the graduates can compete, have updated curricula,” he added.
For her part, the President of the College of MexicoSilvia Giorguli Saucedo, said that technological change has allowed universities to reach more students, but it has also favored the reproduction of inequalities, so they must rethink the way they do it.
“Universities are a reflection of societies and we need to be aware of these inequalities and the potential role we have in breaking them down. We need to revisit the relationship between teaching and research, especially in academic assessment processes,” he said.
Previously, Ricardo Villanueva referred to the conflict with Enrique Alfaro, after the governor canceled his participation in the International Book Fair of Guadalajara (FIL) due to the “attacks” of the house of studies.
“All of us who have a great affection for this fair are here. Therefore, no one is needed here,” the rector said in the opening message.
