MPs back dating violence as domestic violence

Unanimously with 467 votes, the plenary session of the House of Representativesapproved reforms to be considered as violence in the family the one that is generated during courtship, amasiato, with ex-partners, in sponsorship and even in the relationship between sons and daughters of the couple (parent) even if they are not related.

“It will be equated with domestic violence, which occurs in love affairs, with ex-partners, in dating, in sponsorship and even in the relationship between the sons and daughters of the parent’s partner, even if ‘they are not related, but for some reason is integrated into the family nucleus,’ specifies the reform.

The reform sent back to the Senate for analysis, discussion and possible approval, refers to the data of the World Health Organization (WHO) in which he indicates that three out of 10 adolescents suffer from dating violence. In the Mexican case, 76% of adolescents aged 15 to 17 have suffered psychological violence, 17% sexual and 15% physical.

Violence in courtship, the project points out, occurs cyclically in a circle of dependency in which both males and females become trapped, and over time it escalates.

He clarifies that the concept of family is not limited only to people who have a legal relationship such as cohabitation and marriage, but also to a de facto relationship such as the court.

In justifying the opinion, the President of the Gender Equality Commission, the MP for Morena Julieta Vences, affirmed that this reform is essential to combat violence against women and adolescent girls.

“It makes visible other manifestations that tear and violate our rights, in order to design public policies focused on the prevention and resolution of their structural causes.”

39% of single women aged 15 have experienced violence

He pointed out that dating violence is very subtle and almost always imprescriptible”but it damages and scars the lives of many women, it almost always starts with hurtful jokes, jealousy and escalates into physical assault, which can culminate in the most extreme form of violence women experience, femicide.”

He pointed out that the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) has held, from a human rights perspective, that the conception of the family should not be limited only to the interpersonal relationships recognized in the legal field. such as marriage, but should also be considered de facto ties, which is the case with dating.

For this reason, he said, it must be recognized in law that people who are in an active or romantic relationship with their abuser can also experience gender-based violence. He maintained that this addition is a fundamental part of the agenda for the eradication of violence against women.

In this regard, MP Morena Willbert Batun Chulim, a proponent of reform, pointed out that dating violence is a problem that is increasing alarmingly and can end in femicide.

In this context, he underlined that, according to the National Survey of Family Relationship Dynamics (ENDIREH) 2021, 39% of single women aged 15 and over have experienced violence in their relationships.

She pointed out that currently this type of aggression is not recognized in the general law on women’s access to a life without violence, which causes the development of violent relationships.
