The Japanese archipelago is made up of 14,126 islands and islets, many of which were formed due to the intense volcanic activity usually recorded in this area of the planet, known as the Pacific Ring of Fire.

ephemeral islands

However, while the emergence of a volcanic island can be impressive, these formations do not always persist over time, as some of them become diluted through erosion.

This is what happened with certain islets formed in the region during 1904, 1914 and 1986, and which did not last long. The most recent was formed in 2021, a few kilometers from the cradle of the islet.

“Areas that lack lava could disappear. So if more lava comes out and covers the area, I think these surfaces could remain islands forever,” Nakada explained.
