Hotel occupancy rate recorded 60.2% in 70 tourist destinations in Mexico between January and August 2023.

The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marquesannounced that, over the period January-August 2023, the hotel occupancy rate was 60.2%, in the 70 centers monitored by DataTur, i.e. 4.3 percentage points more compared to the same period in 2022.

The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) indicated that the arrival of tourists in hotel rooms, from January to August 2023, amounted to 57.8 million tourists; including 42.7 million domestic tourists, or 73.8% of the total; while 15.1 million were foreign tourists, accounting for 26.2%.

He clarified that the cities recorded 31.4 million tourists in hotel roomswhile seaside centers welcomed 26.4 million tourists in hotel rooms, between January and August 2023.

Torruco Marqués reported that, in the beach centers, the occupancy level in the first eight months of 2023 was 68.6%, which means an increase of 1.8 percentage points, compared to the same period of 2022, where 66.7% occupancy.

He highlighted that in the first eight months of the year, in urban destinations, the occupancy percentage recorded 52.6%, which, compared to the 46.6% recorded between January and August 2022, represents an increase of 6.1 percentage points.

He emphasized that the extremes where occupancy is highest are the Fully planned centers (CIP) with 73.5%, and with the lowest occupancy rate in inland cities with 47.7%, over the period January-August 2023.

He stressed that, from January to August 2023, in occupancy of hotels by tourist centers They stand out for having the highest occupancy rates: Akumal, with 84.9%; Playacar, with 83.8%; Cabo San Lucas, with 79.6%; Nuevo Nayarit, with 76.2%; Cancun, 76.1% and Puerto Vallarta, 74.6%.

The Secretary of Tourism indicated that during the first eight months of 2023, the average number of occupied rooms reached a level of 261,072 units, or 10.6% more compared to the same period of 2022.

For beach centers, In January-August 2023, an average of 140,961 occupied rooms were recordedwhile in the first eight months of 2022 there were 130,765, representing an increase of 7.8%.

In urban destinations, the number of occupied rooms from January to August 2023 was 120,111, representing an increase of 14.1% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Other figures

The head of Sectur said that, over the cumulative period January-August 2023, the average number of available rooms reached a level of 433,774 units.this is 2.8% more compared to the first eight months of last year.

For beach centers, an average of 205,592 available rooms were recorded, while in 2022 there were 195,961, or 4.9% more.

In urban destinations, the number of average available rooms between January and August 2023 It amounts to 228 thousand 183, which represents an increase of 1.0% compared to the same period of 2022.

It is important to highlight that at the end of 2022 the number of rooms in Mexico was 881,022 rooms, which means 76,515 more rooms compared to what was achieved in 2019, an increase of 9, 0% more.
