His apartment was gone. He had turned into a pile of bricks and steel several feet below, leaving Lexus Berry to run alone up the steps of the rickety building, terrified he’d never see his wife again.

“When we got to the door, the place started shaking and shaking and it all literally happened in less than a second, the floor collapsed, she collapsed. So when the ground fell, and she fell four floors down, there were still two other floors falling on her and two floors falling on me. everything was falling apart“, says Lexus Berry.

The six-story building in downtown Davenport suffered a partial collapse shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday, but it took rescuers hours finding Peach Berry trapped in the rubble, and later determined that they would have to amputate one of her legs to free her.

Lexus Berry agreed. Doctors amputated her leg and rushed her to hospital.aware that the rest of the building could collapse at any moment.

“It’s definitely kind of a miracle that he’s here.. Given the circumstances, they had to make a decision. And that was the best thing for her, really, because she’s still here,” Lexus Berry said.

As Peach Berry recovers in a hospital, rescue teams in Davenport try to determine next steps for the fragile structure, where five residents remain missing and authorities fear at least two of them are trapped under the rubble. at the foot of the 116 year old building.

Officials believe the building is still moving and they need to demolish itbut any effort to locate the remains among the rubble could result in the rest of the structure collapsing.

Davenport Police Chief Jeff Bladel said there were 53 residents in the 80-apartment building, and now most of them are struggling to find housing and are starting to rebuild their lives. They were not allowed to return to their apartments to collect their belongings, although crews were able to rescue some pets.
