VIDEOS | A black bear “attacks” a pastry

A hungry black bear walked into the garage of a Connecticut bakery, scared several employees and ate 60 cupcakes before leaving.

Employees of Taste by Spellbound, located in Avon, Connecticut, were loading cakes into a van for delivery when the bear appeared. There are between 1,000 and 1,200 black bears living in Connecticut.according to the state environmental agency, and last year they were sighted at 158 of the state’s 169 sites.

Bakery owner Miriam Stephens wrote in an Instagram post that she heard employee Maureen Williams screaming for help and that there was a bear in the garage.

Williams told WTNH television that tried to scare the bear, but he withdrew and returned three times. She added that he tried to attack her, so she got out of the garage and started running.

A recording taken by surveillance cameras, and which was obtained by WTNH, shows bakers walking around the establishment to try to scare the bear away, but they started running after the animal scared them.

The video shows the bear pulling a container of cupcakes from the garage to the parking lot. Stephens said the bear ate 60 cupcakes. According to Williams, one of the pastry chefs finally managed to get the bear to leave after he honked his horn.

The thief, more than a meter tall, he had already left when police and Department of Energy and Environmental Protection officers arrived at the site. No one was harmed in this episode, which is part of a series of disturbing interactions between black bears and humans in Connecticut.

A 74-year-old woman was bitten on her arms and legs last month when she was attacked by a bear while walking her dog in a Hartford suburb, the first such attack this year. There have been two attacks in the past year, including one in October where a 10-year-old boy was bitten in a backyard.

“The frequency and severity of bear-human interactions are increasingDepartment of Energy and Environmental Protection spokesman Paul Copleman said.

Statistics compiled by the ministry show that there were a record 67 reports of bears entering Connecticut homes in 2022. The previous record was 45 in 2020.
