As we have read in recent months, artificial intelligence has revolutionized all sectors of our daily lives, and the medical sector, which concerns us all, is not left behind.

The healthcare industry is made up of an intensive use of data and statistical approaches that are continually evolving. If we add to this the technology of artificial intelligence, we find that specialists in the field have identified several areas where the benefits are incomparable, such as access and attention to health services in underdeveloped countries, analysis of medical images, the speed with which diagnoses can be created, surveillance and response to infectious outbreaks, and ongoing support for research and decision-making.

Similarly, the accuracy of medical care derived from all the information available on each patient is progressing. Artificial intelligence can improve the accuracy and accessibility of patient data by extracting information using natural language processing techniques. This promotes better clinical decision-making and more effective and efficient management of health records. Wearables, sensors and other connected devices can provide real-time patient data collection and analysis for AI-powered monitoring systems. Even doctors can remotely monitor the health status of patients, detect irregularities and intervene quickly if necessary.

Mexico stands out, among OECD countries, for the insufficiency of hospital infrastructure and human resources in the health sector. Therefore, for our country, the use of this technology, if used correctly by specialists, could even help in the allocation of resources and medical operations, i.e. beds and equipment, through the use of forecasts and predictive analytics to anticipate patient flows. According to México Evalúa, in Mexico we have one bed in public hospitals for every thousand inhabitants, which means that AI could help not only to reduce waiting times, hospital admissions and improve the results for patients, but also to increase operational efficiency and improve the use of resources. With the use of artificial intelligence in Mexico in the medical sector, we would be able to transform the public medical approach into an effective patient-centered approach.

This does not mean that there is also the other side of the coin. The World Health Organization has urged caution in the use of this technology and any other technology when used in patients, as the data used to obtain a specific result may be biased and/or generate and contain inaccurate information, which poses a health risk. For this reason, the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence and any other technology developed should always be a priority for physicians.
