Are you one of those people who can’t wake up without drinking a regular cup of coffee? A study conducted by the University of California at Berkeley pointed out that this habit can help you gain a few steps in exchange for some sleep.

The habits of a total of 100 healthy people, all coffee drinkers, were tracked using a GPS app, a device to measure your heart rate and a glucometer. The researchers asked them to drink or stop drinking coffee.

The results have been incredible. On average, people walked up to a thousand additional steps during the days when they drank coffee, although it cost them 36 minutes of sleep per day. The amount of sleep and steps increased with consumption of the drink.

Overall, this study suggests that drinking coffee is generally safebut people should recognize that there are real, measurable effects that could be helpful or harmful, depending on their goals,” said Gregory Marcus, one of the study’s authors.

Another of its effects is related to the palpitations caused by its consumption. In general, generates benign contractions that allow the strengthening of the heartbut it can be dangerous in the case of any previous heart condition.

The people who took part in the study drank one to six cups of coffee a day and, contrary to what was previously believed, no significant change in cholesterol levels.

“People need to be convinced that coffee is safe and part of a healthy dietsaid Peter Kistler, a scientist at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne.
