Joe Biden’s administration selects CHIPS Act advisors

On Tuesday (20), Joe Biden’s government decided which consultants will be responsible for overseeing the CHIPS Act, which allocates $ 52.7 billion for semiconductor chip manufacturing and research.

Consultants: Aaron “Ronnie” Chatterji, Michael Schmidt, Todd Fisher, Donna Dubinsky and Eric Lin. According to the Undersecretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, the consulting team will be about 50 people.

Aaron “Ronnie” Chatterji is currently chief economist in the Department of Commerce. He will be the White House coordinator for implementation of the law at the National Economic Council (NEC) and will also be responsible for managing the work of the Chip Implementation Board.

Eric Lin, current director of the government’s Materials Measurement Laboratory, was selected for the role of acting director of the CHIPS Bureau of Research and Development.

Michael Schmidt, a current Treasury official, will serve as director of the CHIPS Program Office. Todd Fisher of the Commerce Department will join the program as a senior advisor, and former Palm Computing CEO Donna Dubinsky will serve as a senior advisor for law enforcement.

Gina Raimondo stressed the importance of choosing expert people as consultants for the implementation of CHIPS. “These leaders bring decades of experience in government, industry and the research and development space, with a special emphasis on creating and implementing large-scale programs,” said Raimondo.

The law comes at a time when Americans were concerned about China’s dominance in semiconductor manufacturing. In this way, the legislation seeks to increase the competitiveness of US chip companies and improve the scarcity that has affected several sectors affected by the shortage of products.

The White House said approval of the project should spur new investment in the industry and noted that Qualcomm had agreed to purchase more than $ 4.2 billion worth of chips from the GlobalFoundries factory in New York. Micron’s $ 40 billion investment in chip manufacturing was also reported, with this the US share of the global market is expected to increase from 2% to 10%.
