You can now test iOS 17 for free with developers; see how

Apple has released access to trial versions of its operating systems for everyone, at a very different time than it has done up until then and now without charging anything. With the news, anyone willing and brave enough to use iOS 17 in its initial testing phase can now download the software — but, seriously, think carefully before you do.

What you need to know:

All major manufacturers of products and operating systems, such as Microsoft, Apple and Google, present the latest version of their software, release the first betas for developers to adapt their apps and create new tools with what is new, to only then make the system available for the user to play with.

Either way, Apple is changing its strategy, which involved cash (US$99 a year, or something close to R$487 in direct conversion). Until iOS 16, if you wanted to be the first to test the new operating system on the iPhone, you had to be a developer registered on the Apple company platform, pay the fee and only then download the beta.

Now, with iOS 17, everything changes and anyone can download the first beta version of the operating system and install it on a compatible iPhone. The same goes for macOS on Mac computers, iPadOS on iPad, tvOS on Apple TV, and watchOS on Apple Watch.

With the change to release launch plan testing of operating systems, all you need is an Apple ID and that’s it, download the chosen software even for those who don’t even intend to develop any app or game. Right now there’s only one perk for those still paying $99 a year, and that’s access to all the developer tools.

If you just want to have the latest iOS, not having the developer tools is far from a problem. On the other hand, know that iOS 17, as well as the new versions of macOS, iPadOS, tvOS and watchOS are in their first phase of testing and this means the generous presence of flaws, bugs still in the fix list.

The beta, whether on iOS, Android or Windows, helps the company find defects that engineers missed faster and fix everything before the official launch. As a result, a bank app may fail, and a major messenger may have part of its tools inoperative.

That’s why my golden advice is: if you don’t develop something for iOS, don’t download the iOS 17 beta. If you’re really curious, wait at least for the second or third version, which should be out in the next few months. They will have important fixes for using the iPhone itself.

iOS 17 in its final version is expected to be released with the next iPhone models, in September of this year.
