Lula presented technological challenges while meeting with South American leaders

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met with South American leaders at the Itamaraty Palace, in Brasilia, this Tuesday (30), to discuss current technological challenges and integration between nations.

The event brought together the presidents of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela. The only exception was Peru. The representative was the country’s Prime Minister, Alberto Otárola, as President Dina Boluarte was unable to attend due to the country’s political crisis.

opening of the meeting

In the opening speech of the meeting, President Lula outlined an overview of the challenges faced by countries, including infrastructure, the spread of fake news on social media and the need for mechanisms that reduce the dependence of nations on other global powers.

Challenges

The president also recalled the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, which has affected Brazil and neighboring nations on global supply chains.

He reiterated that, with the war, “our lack of infrastructure and our external vulnerability have been exposed,” and that the region has stopped growing, unemployment has risen, and inflation has risen.

Lula also highlighted the recent attacks on democracy in Brazil.

In Brazil and other countries, the recent attacks on democratic institutions, including the seats of constitutional powers, have offered us a tragic summary of the violence of extremist groups that use digital platforms to promote information campaigns and incitement to hatred.

Integration and cooperation

Faced with the consequences of the war in Ukraine on Latin soil and anti-democratic attacks, President Lula strengthened the unity between the countries and that no nation “can face the current systemic threats alone”.

He recalled how, together, the countries of South America accumulate more than 450 million inhabitants, who represent an important consumer market, and are the fifth largest economy in the world.

The politician then listed suggestions for countries to develop together.
