ChatGPT spreads misinformation about the Google chatbot

This time it was the turn of ChatGPT, currently built into Microsoft’s Bing, to push Bard, a recently launched chatbot from Google. The situation occurred in the early hours of this Wednesday (22). And worse: the foundation brought disinformation.

The case comes shortly after Bard said he was concerned about ChatGPT’s (and himself) potential for spreading disinformation, in a test conducted by The Verge on Tuesday (21).

Lead exchanged between chatbots

If you had asked the Bing chatbot earlier this Wednesday if Bard had been removed, it would have said yes. As proof, I would bring an article where the author discusses a tweet. In it, a user shows that he asked the Google chatbot when he would be taken down and he replied that he already was.

In turn, this response from Bard cited, also as evidence, a comment from HackerNews, in which someone joked about the possibility of this happening. And someone else used ChatGPT to write (false) coverage of this event.

In journalistic jargon, the chatbots gave two consecutive tummy tucks, one on each side. And in the end, they both spread disinformation around. So the concern expressed by the Bard on Tuesday is more than justified.

What does this relationship mean between Bard and ChatGPT

To start with, he shows how the hasty rollout of AI (artificial intelligence)-based chatbots can degrade the Internet’s information ecosystem (which isn’t without its problems).

Furthermore, this case reveals how, currently, chatbots are unable to evaluate reliable news sources, misinterpret stories about themselves, and misreport their own capabilities.

This exchange of elbows may be funny, but it warns of potentially serious consequences. This is because the AI language models in question appear to be unable to reliably separate fact and fiction.
