What is LCD? Understand how technology works and its benefits

LCD is a type of screen, made up of liquid crystals and light polarizers. Hence the name, short for liquid crystal screen (or “Liquid Crystal Screen”, in free translation). To this day, it is one of the most popular types of canvas.

Therefore, you find this technology on TVs, monitors, mobile phones and so on. Subsequently, the it shows you how LCD works, what are the types of LCDs and the benefits of this technology.

How the LCD works

At first, an LCD screen seems like a thing. But it consists of five layers:

Therefore, when it comes to forming images, the process starts in backlighting. It emits light to the polarizing layer, the function of which is to guide illumination. Next, the TFT layer applies an electric current to activate the liquid crystals. Finally, comes the color filter (red, green and blue – the famous RGB). Control the amount of colored light and shape the image.

The principle of technology is one. But several types of LCDs have been developed from it. Check out the most common ones below:

Advantages of this technology

To begin with, among the advantages of LCD are: low production cost, low radiation emission (liquid crystal panels are safer), lower power consumption than OLED (thanks to LED and MiniLED backlighting) and higher brightness (in bright environments).

Of the minuses, you can mention: limited viewing angle (colors are washed out when viewed from certain angles), lower contrast (due to loss of backlight) and slower response time (compared to OLED).
