The planet covered by an ocean of boiling water generates an impasse among scientists

A team of astronomers has made a surprising discovery. Using data from NASA’s James Webb Telescope, researchers have discovered an exoplanet located 70 light-years from Earth that may be entirely covered by an ocean of boiling water.

The exoplanet is part of a system known as TOI-270 and has been named TOI-270 d. According to data collected, the planet is home to water vapor and chemical compounds such as methane and carbon dioxide.

According to the researchers, this chemical combination is compatible with an aquatic world in which the ocean would extend over the entire surface, as well as a hydrogen-rich atmosphere. The study, published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters, highlights that the ocean could reach temperatures above 100W.

The team of scientists argues that, under high atmospheric pressure, such a warm ocean could still be liquid. However, there is no evidence that this planet is habitable. In other words, despite the discovery, it is unknown whether life can thrive there. The information comes from Brazil History Channel.
