Meteor showers 2023: know when they will be next

As reported by , the Perseid meteor shower peaked this weekend, around 1:30 a.m. (Brasilia time) on Sunday (13). Incredible images of the light trails piercing the skies have been obtained from different parts of the world, especially in the countries of the northern hemisphere, where the event was most notable.

Typical for this time of year, the Perseid meteor shower has been active since July 17 and is expected to cease in late August. It occurs when the Earth crosses the path of particles from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, in the constellation Perseus, and this debris passes through the planet’s atmosphere.

The estimated average of events in Brazil was 25-30 meteors per hour, depending on the sky observation conditions in each location, with higher incidences in cities in the north and northeast regions of the country.

However, although the Moon also cooperated this year, being in its waning phase (with only 5% brightness), the records here fell far below expectations, according to Marcelo Zurita, a columnist for president of the Paraiba Astronomy Association (APA) and technical director of the Brazilian Meteor Observation Network (Bramon).

Thus, the meteor shower expected to be one of the biggest of the year, ended up leaving Brazilian observers something to be desired. But we must not be discouraged! The year will offer us yet six more such events – which you can see in the calendar below!

The Perseids have opened the second half of the 2023 meteor shower calendar. Of the six to come, the most spectacular expected is the Geminids, which occurs in December.
