What is ADHD, a disorder that affects Suzana Alves, the former aunt

This week, Suzana Alves, better known as Tiazinha, revealed via her Instagram that she has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The actress, who broke the news on her 44th birthday (Aug.3), said she learned of the condition two months ago.

“I found out that I have ADHD and it is a genetic condition. I have already won so far and I will continue to fight against everything that limits my path on this path ”, writes the artist.

What is ADHD?

According to the Brazilian Association for Attention Deficit (ABDA), ADHD is a neurobiological disorder, of genetic causes, that appears in childhood and accompanies the individual throughout life. It is characterized by symptoms of inattention, restlessness and impulsiveness.

The condition is officially recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), being the most common disorder in children and adolescents undergoing specialized services: it affects 3 to 5% of children worldwide.

Among the main symptoms of ADHD are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Other problems can also arise depending on the stages of life, such as difficulties in school and in relationships with other children, or inattention to everyday things and work, as well as memory deficiencies, in the case of adults.

What are the causes of ADHD?

Scientific studies show that people with ADHD have changes in the frontal region and connections with the rest of the brain. The orbital frontal part is one of the most developed in the human being and is responsible for the inhibition of behavior (i.e. controlling or inhibiting inappropriate behaviors), the ability to pay attention, memory, self-control, organization and planning.

In addition to heredity, research shows that nicotine and alcohol, if ingested during pregnancy, can cause changes in parts of the baby’s brain, including the frontal orbital region. Some other studies also showed that women who had problems during childbirth, causing fetal distress, were more likely to have children with ADHD. The causal relationship, however, has not yet been determined.

It is worth noting that family problems can aggravate an ADHD condition, but not cause it.

The Ministry of Health approved, on Wednesday (4), a document with the criteria for the diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to information from Brazil agency, the declaration covers the treatment and regulatory mechanisms, as well as the control and evaluation of the disease. Find out more here.
