International beer day: what are the health benefits of the drink?

This Friday (5th) is the famous “let’s have a drink” day, yes, it is International Beer Day. The drink is a favorite of Brazilians and, despite all the fitness group’s fear of the barley product, for the uninitiated, it brings several health benefits.

The first of these is to the intestine. According to a study published in the journal Journal of Agricultural and Food ChemistryDrinking beer increases the number of good bacteria in the gut, which can reduce the risk of developing heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

The research also included non-alcoholic beers and yielded the same results. Keeping in mind that there is no safe level for alcohol consumption, scientists recommend non-alcoholic beer.

Another verified benefit is related to the brain and also the heart. According to a study by Di Castelnuovo et al, published in 2002, moderate beer consumption can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 21% and the risk of stroke by 33%, as reported by the Saúde em Dia (SD) website.

Among other benefits, also proven by science, are: strengthening of the bones (published in the journal Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture)keeps the kidneys healthy (published in Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology), reduces the risk of cancer (advertised by the Multiemo Oncology and Hematology Center) and increases immunity (published in the scientific journal Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism).

On the other hand, it is clear that not all people can safely enjoy a beer. For people with cholesterol or blood sugar changes, beer is not recommended. The rule also applies to those who have liver disease.

Does beer make you fat?

According to Adriana Stavro, functional nutritionist and phytotherapist, to SD, “the calories in a beer depend on how much alcohol is added, on the type of beer and, of course, on the amount of carbohydrates”. Therefore, it is worth noting that the higher the alcohol level, the more calories.

So, just like carbohydrate-rich foods make you fat, excess beer – which has carbohydrates – can also contribute to weight gain (sadly).

It is worth remembering that all the benefits mentioned are valid for people who consume beer in a moderate way. So, sextou in the best way, with Beer Day, but have fun in moderation!
