WHO implements digital health passport for vaccines

The World Health Organization (WHO) will implement a digital health passport, it announced on Monday (5). The provision is still being processed and, in a first phase, should contain the certifications of the anti-Covid-19 vaccine, as well as the results of the tests for the virus. In later stages, the passport may include records of other vaccinations and additional information that can help prevent disease.

EU extension

The WHO digital passport is, in fact, an extension of what is already being done in the European Union to monitor vaccination against covid-19.

Building on the highly successful EU Digital Certificate Network, WHO aims to provide all Member States with access to an open source digital health tool, based on the principles of fairness, innovation, transparency and data protection, and privacy . .

objective

According to the WHO, the purpose of the passport is to “facilitate global mobility and protect citizens around the world from current and future health threats, including pandemics”.

The measure has been in place in 80 EU countries and territories since 2021, during the pandemic. Globally, WHO hopes to use it to monitor and prevent future disease outbreaks or epidemics.

The implementation will mark the start of operations of the WHO Global Digital Health Certification Network (GDHCN). More digital records are expected to be announced in the coming months, with the same goal of ensuring global access to health.
