From 2000 to 2007, Hedi Slimane, then the artistic director of Dior Homme, dutifully documented the rise of the new rock scene between New York and London. He painted several photographic works from it, including internship (Steidl/7L, 2004) and The birth of the London cult (Steidl/7L, 2005).

His favorite subjects, which he regularly performed in concerts, were famous bands: The Strokes, Interpol, Razorlight, LCD Soundsystem and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Of course, without forgetting The Libertines, the explosive London duo formed by Pete Doherty and Carl Barratt, whose creator remained very close. Their style then becomes the uniform of a generation: pants are tight, suits are sharp, ties are ultra-thin, leather boots are worn, and we don’t forget our fedoras.

Half models, half group

The Summer 2023 women’s collection, presented via a ten-minute video on the house’s social networks on November 17, pays homage to this period. Hedi Slimane, who did not create for women at the time, gives us the female counterpart of the male silhouette of the 2000s: the pants are stuck to the legs – the return of heaviness! – Baby doll dresses are knitted or leather, shorts are very short and stylish with raw denim or leather.

There are also tailored blazers and stretch Perfectos, biker boots and very sophisticated scarves, short dresses with large sequins and suede jackets, as well as spartans climbing along the leg, as well as bags. Bag style, worn in the crook of the elbow. We think we recognize the looks of the it-girls of the time, half models, half groupies, whether they were Agyness Deyn, Leigh Lezark or Alexa Chung. Not forgetting Kate Moss who was Pete Doherty’s companion at the time. We can also see a message intended for the well-known generation Z (born between 1997 and 2010), fascinated by the style of the 2000s, identified on social networks as Y2K (“the year 2000”).

Filmed on the beach in Saint-Tropez (Var) and at Hedi Slimane’s Kerouac villa in Ramtouel, this collection is part of a series of Céline shows broadcast on video in southern France – Monaco and Nice, previously – where. The creator has been living since 2018. The soundtrack takes on a song by the Libertines Music when the lights go outFrom the cult album libertinesin 2004. Also very attached to Los Angeles, where he lived for a long time, the designer will present his Fall 2023 women’s collection there on December 8, this time with the public.
