“Rule 34”: Pleasure and the Politics of Bodies

In the abundance of remarkable works gathered in Locarno (Switzerland) in 2022. Rule 34The third feature film of Brazilian director Julia Murat was awarded the Golden Leopard. An experimental film that any feminist would dream of, it wanted to get to grips with the complexity of certain issues (pornography, sex work, etc.) without any moral judgement. Simone (Sol Miranda), a young Afro-Brazilian woman, aspiring lawyer, is finishing her law studies. Discussions at the university about the shortcomings of Brazil’s penal system are heated and interesting.

A young lawyer has a different life, his desires lead him to sado-masochistic sexuality. Simone monetizes her services on a porn site, or “fulfills” her desires with a duo of friends. There’s an unexpected sweetness to this chronicle of Brazilian youth that reflects pleasure and body politics. The film also takes the form of a thriller, as Simon conducts increasingly sophisticated experiments at the request of a client – the film is prohibited for people under the age of 16. In shots of unsettling plasticity, the Brazilian filmmaker depicts the freedom of a woman who re-appropriates men’s fantasies by replicating them according to her own rules. I’ve never seen anything like it in movies. Cl.F.

A Brazilian film by Julia Murat. With Sol Miranda, Lucas Andrade (1h40).

“Ვow! »: stripping agents per square meter

The argument is easy as pie. Two real estate agents take turns visiting two properties in Bugival (Yvelines). On the one hand, a functional one-room apartment in the city center; On the other hand, a large bourgeois house “swimming pool” In view of RER and planned works. Let’s say right away, this film, which was shot in less than a month, is a success that has thrilled the celebrity “Wow” After which two advisers run.

A few words about them. Oracio (Bruno Podalydès) easily picks up the keys, but knows how to play sensitive strings. And then there’s Catherine (Karin Viard), recently widowed. Far-sighted and conscientious, he crosses the city in no time on a small scooter that is easy to park, and wears medical shoes as he shows the apartment, the area of which he knows the inside of each room. Even real estate agents have spleens in this rhythm comedy with flawless dialogues. And every appearance of them, watched and inhabited, gives the impression that they are acting out their lives on the stage of a theater. Mr. Dl.
