The Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) can work if the market adapts to this new reality of air links, said Jose Angel Gurriaformer Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

“What we have to see and calibrate is with the results. If the question of the number of flights that can be received at each airport becomes a restriction or a limitation, it will have to be seen,” said the former finance secretary and to Crédit public as part of the XXVIIIth edition of the National Meetings Industry Council (CNIR).

“Now, very interesting, because here (Cancún) we are talking about a place where today it has become a hub (operations center) and then what happens, that they adapt. example, in Tijuana there is this step, the CBX (Express Border Crossing), very interesting, very important and what happened? So many flights to the East leave from Tijuana and it has already become a hub,” he added.

Gurría was head of the Ministry of Finance and Credit from 1998 to 2000, occupying the transitional position that year, which also ended with the hegemony of the PRI in executive power, a political group to which he also participated.

The former secretary of OECDbetween 2006 and 2021 offered his perspective on the Mexico City airport problem due to operational problems at Benito Juárez International Airport and that AIFA is not growing in passengers.

“So what happens is that given the opportunities, what happens immediately? Alternatives arise because there are gains and profits. Never underestimate creativity and invention and a sense of ownership, the desire to make a profit.

“Those are two clear examples (Cancun and Tijuana), where a new terminal has been expanded here in Cancun, etc. and immediately there are more flights coming here. Now you can fly direct to many European countries and that shows you that the market is working,” Gurría pointed out.
