The auto industry has urged the federal government to develop comprehensive public policies for the short, medium and long term, as well as the tools and actions necessary to electromobility in the country.

In a joint statement, the Mexican Automobile Dealers Association (AMDA), the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA), the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Producers (ANPACT) and the National Automotive Parts Industry (INA) have expressed concern over the recent release of the National Electric Mobility Strategy (ENME), for which they have asked to incorporate elements that the industry has proposed to achieve the objectives of a fast and efficient transition to electromobility in Mexico.

Among other things, they call for the establishment of a system of fiscal and non-fiscal incentives, accompanied by appropriate financial instruments, for all technologies available on the market, in order to promote the production of low-emission vehicles and their accelerated adoption in the Mexican market.

“It is essential to underline that, even if the objectives of the SEND ME seek the mass introduction of electric vehicles and electric hybrids within an ecosystem of internal combustion vehicles, the commitments set out in the aforementioned strategy for the coming decades are not achievable,” the sector states in the document.

The auto industry already has electrification technologies, but there is no infrastructure or legal certainty to quickly go to zero emissions, he commented. Miguel Elizalde, president of ANPACT.

“The sale of electric cars is low, last year there were about five thousand cars, but I do not see a massive purchase of these vehicles in the next five years,” said Guillermo Rosales, executive chairman of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors. (AMDA).

He explained that for the low-income Mexican market, the price of these models limits the purchase, since they revolve around 400,000 pesos.

“There are no government subsidies, so we see the overcrowding from afar,” he said.
