Light car sales rebound in June, surpass pre-pandemic level

In June 2023, the sale of new light vehicles was 113,553 units, which is 25.7% more than the units sold in June 2022.

Also, in the first six months of 2023, 633 thousand 87 light cars have been registered new sold, an increase of 22% compared to the same period in 2022, according to figures published yesterday by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

“The result obtained in June records 14 months of growth and thus consolidates the trend of recovery in the domestic automotive market from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic”said Guillermo Rosales, executive president of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA).

The official pointed out that compared to June 2019, pre-coronavirus figures, the sale of light vehicles was 6.34% higher than that of June 2023, however, the cumulative sale to June continues to be lower than that of 2019. at 1.17%.

The auto industry suspended operations due to the pandemic to avoid contagion, which impacted its production and sales.

“The results for the first half of the year are favorable: the supply of the distribution networks is restored and the demand capacity has shown resilience in the face of inflation and high interest rates,” Rosales said.

He added that most brands are showing positive results compared to the previous year and the sales outlook has increased.

According to figures from the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA), Nissan has the largest market share in the first half of the year with 18%; followed by General Motors with 13% and Volkswagen with 11%.
