Cementos Moctezuma will invest $20 million this year in its sustainability strategy, which commits to environmental, social and governance (ASG) criteria to meet its 2030 goal of reducing emissions by 35%.

José María Barroso, CEO of Cementos Moctezuma, in an acknowledged interview

“This year, we are going to invest 20 million dollars in additional machines thanks to which the objective of reducing – for example – 100 tons of polluting emissions to 35% is achieved.”

For this, he said, they have invested billions of dollars for more than 20 years and, despite the fact that this has increased their costs,

“The economic investment is not as important as the commitment to comply with sustainability.”

During the presentation of Cementos Moctezuma’s integrated annual report and sustainability strategy, he indicated that the company has a bigger goal as it seeks to achieve the goal of reaching zero emissions by 2050.

Thus, for two decades, the company has chosen to use alternative materials for the production of cement,

“We use the ash from sugarcane bagasse and other products to incorporate into cement…and in the case of concrete we seek to capture CO2 from the atmosphere to inject it into the concrete. ”

Barroso pointed out that

“It is not the dark thread, it is already done in other countries, in Europe and in Canada, where they are very regulated, we are barely 20 years behind in trying to reduce pollutants”, although assured that Cementos Moctezuma and the entire industry are committed to sustainability.

However,

“Industry contaminates between 20 and 30% of the total, the rest belongs to society, so we all have to collaborate, there has to be a culture change, industry or government cannot do it alone, we have to all participate.”

Furthermore, he revealed that Cementos Moctezuma is part of the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA), a global organization that represents the cement and concrete industry.

“where we have signed commitments related to sustainability and we must comply with them”.

And he added “the issue of sustainability costs is not savings but it is a commitment, we are not here for money but for sustainability and the benefit of society”

And it highlighted three actions as part of this strategy: increase the use of alternative fuels by up to 30% in its furnaces; reduce atmospheric emissions, as well as energy consumption (light), and reduce water consumption by 30%.

In this sense, Maribel Leyte Jiménez, Corporate Director of Sustainability, Environment and Continuous Improvement of Cementos Moctezuma, presented the Integrated Annual Report where she highlighted the health and safety of her workers through the prevention; Energy and Climate Change, which reduces the carbon footprint by reducing polluting emissions and corporate social responsibility.
