Octavio Romero Oropeza, General Manager of PEMEX announced that the states that initially benefited from the fertilizer distribution are Sinaloa and the State of Mexico.

He commented that they sent “20,000 tons to the State of Mexico of 22,000, the same thing we do in Sinaloa, which are the two states that we have to cover during the month of January”.

He also noted that through the “Fertilizer for Wellness Program,” fertilizer delivery will be for 32 federal entities. From 2019 to 2021, this program benefited nine entities: Guerrero, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Morelos, Hidalgo, Chiapas, Durango, Chiapas and Zacatecas.

He also took the opportunity to show the facilities of the ProAgroindustria plant in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, which was shut down for 21 years, but was acquired by the oil company and recently started operating.

Additionally, he announced that they are rehabilitating a second urea plant in Coatzacoalcos and that repairs will be completed within the next few months.

In the current six-year period, in order to increase production and contribute to food self-sufficiency, it was decided to rehabilitate the national fertilizer industry with the resources that were returned to the Mexican government for the purchase of Agroazotés, that is to say a total of 216 million dollars.

Additionally, PEMEX produced an average of 61.2% of the Mexican government’s Small Farmer Support Program fertilizer delivered between May 2019 and December 2022.

However, according to the PEMEX 2023-2027 business plan: “The armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine involves relevant players in the international fertilizer market. In 2021, 25% of the net imports of this product came from Russia, so the war and the uncertainty of the international supply affect the availability and the prices on the national market. ANIQ estimates that in 2021, fertilizer consumption in Mexico amounted to 1,528,000 tons, which includes nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced during his morning conference that in the first four years of this administration, more than 676,000 tons of fertilizer have been delivered to producers who benefit from this Mexican government initiative.

By 2023, with the production capacity of the two fertilizer complexes, it will be possible to achieve 70% of the target set in this initiative, while in 2024 PEMEX will produce 84.2% of the fertilizer and by the end of this year, 100 will be covered. %.
