Brazil wants to have the crookedest road in the world and will spend a fortune to get it

Currently the crookedest street in the world is in San Francisco, California, but an ambitious project in a small town in Santa Catarina intends to bring that title to Brazil.

The road, still to be built, will be built in São Joaquim, a city of just over 27,000 inhabitants in the Serra de Santa Catarina. According to the town hall, the project should go off the table soon and the tender for the start of the works will open on Thursday 01.

We will enter the Guinness Book, the book of records, as the crookedest road in the world, which will no longer be in California and will become São Joaquim.

road construction

Attempts to build the road began in 2022, when two tenders were launched, but neither of them were interested. The relaunched tender has values and terms of facilitated proposals, for own means from Financing to Infrastructures and Sanitation (Finisa).

The site has been dubbed the Via Sinuosa Tourist Complex and will feature a belvedere overlooking the city, an endless swing, water fountains, a pedestrian stairway and other attractions. But what will guarantee the title of the crookedest road in the world are its 10 sharp curves. The objective of the project is to promote the tourist and cultural development of the city.

Until then, the title belongs to Lombard Street, with 8 hairpin bends winding its way down a steep slope. The street is one of the most famous places in San Francisco and is known for being the setting for several films, such as The ant man and the wasp AND Bullitt.

It is estimated that the new one will cost around 3.75 million reais for those interested in investing in the construction. The São Joaquim City Hall has not yet released the dates for the start of the works and the expected completion.
