Police: At least 4 injured in shooting in Washington DC

WASHINGTON (AP) — Police and federal agents responded Friday in a northwest Washington neighborhood after at least four people were shot.

City officials advised citizens to stay home due to an “active threat” as dozens of officers in tactical gear searched for the suspect.

Police responded to the scene near Connecticut Avenue and Van Ness Street in the Van Ness neighborhood of Washington shortly before 3:30 p.m.

The sound of gunfire rocked the usually quiet neighborhood, home to several schools, universities and numerous embassies.

Hours later, the Metropolitan Police Department reported that investigators were seeking to interview a 23-year-old Virginia man they had identified as a person of interest.

The man is “linked to social media posts” that have surfaced as part of the investigation, Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Emerman said.

Victims include a 54-year-old man, a woman in her 30s, a woman in her 60s who was grazed in the back by a bullet and a 12-year-old girl who was shot in the arm, Emerman said.

All victims are presumed cured. Police warned people living in nearby Cleveland Park and Van Ness neighborhoods to shelter in place for hours.

The shots came just as parents were picking up their children from Edmund Burke School, a private community college, forcing parents to flee the scene and prompting Burke and other nearby schools to close immediately.
