In a statement published on the official blog, Google has announced that it is ending its Stadia games service. The cloud gaming platform will remain active for gamers only until January 18, 2023.

Google also announced that it will refund all Stadia hardware purchases made on the Google Store, as well as games and other additional content purchased from the store. The company expects the repayments to be completed by mid-January.

In the blog post, Google Stadia Vice President Phil Harrison talked about the shutdown of the gaming platform. According to him, despite the efforts to optimize the product, there was not a strong demand from the gamer audience.

“While Stadia’s approach to streaming consumer games was built on a solid technological foundation, it didn’t gain the traction with the users we hoped for, so we made the difficult decision to start shutting down our Stadia streaming service. “, he has declared. Harrison said.

The statement also states that employees of the Stadia team will be distributed to other divisions of the company. Harrison says Google sees opportunities to use the service’s technology elsewhere, such as YouTube, Google Play, and augmented reality (AR) productions.

Google Stadia originally launched in 2019, with 94 games released on the platform, and hasn’t been made available in Brazil. The service has been the subject of speculation about its closure since last year, after the number of games released on Google’s cloud dropped and the company’s development studio shut down.
