End-to-end encryption is one of the most common features Instagram uses to protect your personal information. Among its applications is the possibility of activating them in chats so that only the sender and recipient have access to the conversations. Below, check out more about the feature and how to access the settings to turn it on or off.
What is end-to-end encryption on Instagram?
In general, encryption is a system that promises to increase the security of a file or information. In the case of conversations on Instagram, end-to-end encryption ensures that only the sender and recipient have access to what is sent via chat. Therefore, if the conversation is intercepted by a third party, encryption must protect the information exchanged.
How to turn encryption on and off on Instagram
Necessary time: 2 minutes.
The act of encrypting messages must be done manually by the user in each chat. In this way it is possible that some DMs have encryption and others do not; It’s all up to you.
- Access messages
On the Instagram home page, click on the speech bubble icon, located at the top right, to be directed to the chats;
- Select the desired chat
Choose the conversation you want to encrypt and click on it;
- Open profile
When the conversation opens, click on the person’s name;
- Access the settings
On the profile of the person you are chatting with, click on the “Privacy and security” button;
- Turn on encryption
Finally, click the “Use end-to-end encryption” button. Then a new empty chat will appear, with the same person and there will be a warning that the conversation is encrypted.
To save this encrypted conversation, simply send a message. This means that there will be two chats with the same person: one will be encrypted and the other will not.
To make the security work, only use encrypted chat, which will be marked with a padlock under the name of the person you’re chatting with. If you want to turn off this encryption, simply tap the encrypted chat and delete it from the conversation list in your direct messages.
Remember that if you leave the chat encrypted while it is empty, it will automatically be deleted. Therefore, as soon as you complete the tutorial, you will need to send a message to the person you were chatting with so that this conversation is saved with encryption.
