Elon Musk once again rules out hydrogen as an energy storage medium

“Hydrogen is a bad choice,” insists the tycoon.

They’re gonna have to stop asking Elon Musk on hydrogen as an energy storage medium. He doesn’t like it, he doesn’t shake hands, he doesn’t agree.

Tesla CEO reiterated his rejection of hydrogen as a possible alternative to a transition plan to a more sustainable future.

The World Energy Trade website quoted him in an interview at the Financial Times summit on the future of cars. Musk cataloged hydrogen as “dumbest thing i can imagine for energy storage”.

Elon was asked if he believed hydrogen could play an accelerating role in moving away from fossil fuels and his response was forceful: “Do not”.

I can’t stress that enough. The number of times I was questioned about the hydrogen, it could be… it’s a lot more than 100 times, maybe 200 times. It is important to understand that if you want a means of energy storage, hydrogen is a bad choice“said the first at the controls of SpaceX.

The logistical problem of hydrogen

For Elon Musk, using hydrogen to store energy would require “giant tanks” to keep it in liquid formand added that if it is stored in gaseous form, the tanks must be even larger.

The International Energy Agency describes hydrogen as a “versatile energy carrier”. It has a wide range of applications and can be used in sectors such as industry and transport.

The organization, based in Paris, France, added that hydrogen and the fuels made from it were able to “carry energy from renewables over long distances: from regions to solar and abundant wind turbines, such as Australia or Latin America, to energy-hungry regions, cities thousands of kilometers away.

But Musk has always been against the use of hydrogen. Years ago at the World Automotive News Congress he called “extremely absurdto hydrogen fuel cells.

In June 2020, he tweeted, “fuel cells = nonsense sold», and added in July of the same year that «stupid hydrogen sales make no sense”.

For Elon Musk, the problem with hydrogen is that does not exist naturally on Earth: “You have to split the water by electrolysis or crack the hydrocarbons. And when you crack hydrocarbons, you haven’t really solved the fossil fuel problem, and the efficiency of electrolysis is mediocre.”.
