ChatGPT Creator Offers $1M for AI Help; are you interested?

OpenAI, developer of ChatGPT, said this Thursday (25) that it will grant a millionaire donation for ten experiments that will help it solve important Artificial Intelligence (AI) questions.

The company’s questions that can be answered by third parties include democratic processes on how to address biases in the software and the limits of answers.

OpenAI will donate ten equal shares of a $1 million fund to people who submit compelling proposals.

According to an OpenAI blog post announcing the endowment fund, some of the questions are whether AI should criticize public figures and what is considered an “average person.” That is, the company seems to want to understand the limitations of the answers.

OpenAI, now backed by $10 billion from Microsoft, leads calls for AI regulation.

However, these requests are ambiguous: while Sam Altman, CEO of the company and considered the father of ChatGPT, has spoken about the need for rules on his world tour, he does not want such strict rules and, recently, the company threatened to withdraw by the European Union due to proposed regulations.

OpenAI’s grants wouldn’t fund the research itself, as the company’s AI engineers easily earn more than $100,000 (and could top triple that).

The help requested is in fact aimed at making the company’s work “as inclusive as possible”. This is what OpenAI claims and is launching the program “to take a step in that direction”.

Will OpenAI accept proposals?

OpenAI specified that no recommendation is “mandatory”, that is, even if the company accepts the idea and wants to grant a loan, it is not obliged to implement it.

However, as the blog post shows, the company is willing to accept different viewpoints and shape their views on how to take AI forward.
