The artificial intelligence (AI) “boom” goes far beyond chatbots like the famous ChatGPT. In China, a new use of technology has sparked public interest as well as criticism.

The country this week announced virtual reporter Ren Xiaoron, its new AI-powered news anchor. Ren started acting in “People’s newspaper”, a Chinese state-run newspaper.

The creators behind the idea told al The sun that the reporter was programmed to answer questions about specific topics, such as education, health, labor and environmental protection, for example, that is, there seems to be no space to cover more specific or controversial topics.

Ultimately, public response was mostly positive. On Weibo (a kind of Twitter in China) many have praised the presenter. However, Ren did not escape criticism unscathed. One of the users said he didn’t understand her why she preferred to use a robot on a “real” anchor to broadcast the news.

Is fashion taking hold? It is worth mentioning that the CNET portal also tried to use AI to write articles and the strategy did not go as planned.
