The robot lawyer will no longer defend the defendant in court

DoNotPay’s AI, which was slated to be used in February to defend an accused violator of US traffic rules, will no longer be used during the trial.

DoNotPay CEO Joshua Browder’s decision was announced after he received several letters from US law enforcement officials threatening him with prosecution and jail time.

“Several state orders threatened us. One also said a referral to the DA’s office and prosecution and jail time would be possible.” NPR.

According to the CEO, in one of the letters he received, a court official said that the practice of using AI in court was not authorized by law, being punishable by six months’ imprisonment.

“Even if it didn’t happen [a prisão]the threat of criminal charges was enough to derail,” Browder said.

What does DoNotPay

DoNotPay is a startup born in 2015 for consumer legal advice created by Joshua Browder, a Computer Science graduate from Stanford University. The AI ​​algorithm was designed to help users resolve legal and legal issues involving traffic tickets.

“We help consumers fight the multinationals and overcome bureaucracy, freeing them from parking tickets and refunds from big companies, such as airlines… Our vision of DoNotPay is to make the law free,” says the CEO in the promotional video of the startups.

As revealed by The GuardianDuring 21 months of operation in London and New York, the chatbot managed to contest 160,000 parking tickets.

Starting in 2020, the startup started investing in implementing AI in the chatbot, helping users cope with fines, health plans, service subscriptions and more. In a Twitter post, Browder shows how the company’s ChatGPT was able to negotiate a $10 discount on the company’s monthly Internet bills. Check it out below:
