Government installs internet in Yanomami indigenous reserve; understand

The Yanomami Indigenous Reserve, in Roraima, has gained great attention from the media and authorities due to the severe malnutrition suffered by children and adults due to the advance of illegal mining in the region. The federal government has dispatched medical teams to the region and installed a broadband internet signal on the reservation.

The purpose of the Internet is to assist in communication between teams responsible for delivering all humanitarian aid in the region. The reserve is considered a geographically isolated territory and this could be one of the reasons why the major crisis has taken so long to discover.

The Ministry of Communications, in collaboration with Telebras, has installed 15 T3SAT (Telebras Satellite Transportable Terminals) model antennas in the region. The points add to another seven that already exist and connect to the internet through the SGDC (Geostationary Defense and Strategic Communications Satellite).

The satellite launched in 2017 is focused on strategic and military use, however, the Brazilian government has decided to use it also in Roraima due to the plight of the Yanomami.

The T3SAT model works connected to the mains and, in the event of a power failure, has an 8-hour emergency battery system. The antenna allows a connection with a download speed of 20 Mbps and an upload speed of 2 Mbps.

The Ministry of Communications is studying a permanent installation in the Yanomami reserve to increase communication with the outside world.

This type of satellite link has already been used on other occasions in Brazil, such as in the tragedy of Brumadinho (MG), in 2019, and in the rains of PetrĂ³polis (RJ), last year.
