LR presidential candidates were opposed to any alliance with the far-right

“Unification of rights”: the expression, every time it is mentioned, is admired in the Les Républicains (LR) party. Wanted by many far-right figures, such as failed presidential candidate Eric Zemore, this alliance project has, for the time being, always been rejected by the Republican right, at least at the national level. The dilapidation that arose in France has not yet fallen, despite the unprecedented loss of political space by the LR on the one hand, and the rise to power of Marine Le Pen’s National Action (RN) on the other.

Elsewhere in Europe, however, the classical right lacks the same modesty. In Sweden at the end of the summer, and probably in Italy, after the legislative elections on September 25, the equivalent formations of the LR in these two countries have formed alliances with the extreme right in order to gain power. .

A situation that might find an echo in France? At a time when the Republican right must choose a new party president, some executives internally fear that one of the candidates, Alpes-Maritimes deputy Eric Chiot, will be tempted by such a marriage. This hypothesis is even regularly mentioned by opponents of these hard-right supporters. What we imagine is the explosion of the party if Mr. Ciotti is elected by the members during the LR convention in early December and that such a merger has taken place. The elected representative of the Alpes-Maritimes, remember, did he not already declare the superiority of Eric Zemour in the event of a duel with Emmanuel Macron? Basically, he no longer speaks the same language as the extreme right when he calls for a “French Guantanamo” ?

“It’s a very bad calculation”

When questioned, however, Mr Ciotti dismisses these fears. “An alliance with the National Action will suppress the right-wing, which will lead to its disappearance”, he says. In his eyes, such a marriage did not even work for me “Political alliance, but control of one party over the other”. To say that there is too much immigration does not suit Marine Le Pen.Must believe Mr. Ciotti. “Otherwise, Gerald Darmanin, who considers him soft, is in the same business.”According to him.

Apart from the simple case of Eric Ciott, there are actually many similarities in public statements between LR figures and the far right on sovereign issues, security and immigration. The conspiratorial concept of the “Great Replacement”, quotas on the number of immigrants, the direct link between crime and immigration… these topics are regularly justified here and there.
