Meteor crosses the sky next to an airplane in Rio Grande do Sul

Heller & Jung observatory cameras have captured yet another incredible glimpse of a meteor in Rio Grande do Sul. Images show the fireball passing from a plane in Tramandaí, on the coast of the state, last Thursday (25).

The plane that appears in the video is a TAP Airbus, from Portugal, and it departed from Porto Alegre for Lisbon around 20:00 (Brasilia time).

What do you need to know?

The TAP airbus was at an altitude of four kilometers nine hundred meters. And the meteor at an altitude of thirty kilometers, a distance of about twenty-five kilometers

Carlos Fernando Jung, head of the observatory, in an interview with G1

What meteor is this?

In the interview with G1, the professor explained that the Tramandaí meteor is part of an asteroid or comet that is not yet known. That is, the origin of the stone has yet to be discovered.

Meteors are the entry of small space rocks into the Earth’s atmosphere, causing the surrounding gas to heat and ionize, generating a generally whitish trail of light, and come to be known as shooting stars.

However, it can take on colors in shades of green, red and even blue depending on the composition of the rock. The occurrence of meteors can be an isolated event or associated with a rain. Rains usually occur from comets that have passed close to Earth and left behind small fragments in orbit.

These fragments are usually very small and burn completely when they enter the atmosphere, presenting no risk. However, depending on the size, composition and angle of entry, meteors can survive the process and the remaining fragment is known as a meteorite.
