3D dressing can improve burn and cancer treatment; see how

One of the challenges in treating burns is how often dressings need to be changed, as the process is extremely painful for patients. Researchers at the University of Waterloo have found a way to improve the quality of this service: they created a bandage from a 3D printer that adheres to the skin.

The bandage uses advanced polymers made with a 3D printer, which can improve patient healing and even be used in cancer treatment, drug delivery and the cosmetic industry.

The printer personalizes the material, which then adheres tightly to the surface of the leather.

In addition, the team of Dr. Boxin Zhao, a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Waterloo, has made great strides in developing a reusable hydrogel dressing that would avoid constant changing.

Other applications

Initially thought to treat burns, the 3D bandage can also help in the treatment of cancer. In traditional chemotherapy treatment, the patient may have to stay in a clinic for hours, which can be tiring and uncomfortable. This dressing can provide consistent drug delivery outside the clinical setting, alleviating some of the challenges associated with traditional methods.

In the cosmetic and beauty industry, Zhao says that cosmetologists can also benefit from the bandage.

Cosmetologists can use 3D scanning technology to analyze their clients’ facial features and customize hydrogel masks infused with specific facial and skin care products. Additionally, this innovative approach may benefit plastic surgeons.

Next steps

The next steps for the research team led by Zhao are to further improve the dressing material and make it commercially viable to be used in practice.
